Just as EMDR is a very different approach to psychotherapy, Therapy Intensives are a very different approach to providing EMDR treatment.  Because of the “rewiring” and truly healing effects of EMDR, a Therapy Intensive can work in ways that are not possible utilizing standard talk-therapy techniques. This means significantly more material can be processed and healed much faster in a Therapy Intensive than is possible in traditional weekly therapy.

Therapy Intensives embrace a trauma-informed approach, meaning that we view past painful experiences as the root of presenting complaints and difficulties. When these experiences have been neutralized and the brain rewires, it is much easier to change present behaviors and attitudes, as well as to prepare for future challenges. This makes Therapy Intensives a wonderful option for those seeking to make significant progress in short periods of time, for those who have limited availability to routine therapy services, for those who are at a standstill in their current therapy regime, or for those who are in crisis needing to push through events currently causing distress and dysfunction in the lives.

During the Therapy Intensive you will be the therapist's only client for each full working day of your retreat. A Therapy Intensive usually entails 6 to 7 hours per day for 2 to 4 consecutive days. Rather than dealing with things on a weekly basis for an extended period of time, you can often work through many issues intensively and fast track the healing and relief you seek. Your therapist will typically be available to work with you from 8:00am to 4:00pm with an hour break for lunch and other breaks as needed. You will start with a brief orientation and then an in-depth discussion with your therapist to explore your history as well as your current situation, including your strengths, resources, problems, and what you have tried in the past. Your therapist will also ask about your short-term and long-term goals.

Therapy Intensives are a financial investment in you and your future. Rather than being on the weekly payment plan of traditional therapy treatment, you will be investing a larger amount of money up front (that in the long run will likely still be less money than ongoing weekly therapy). Many people have to plan ahead and save before they can schedule Therapy Intensives. Once the retreat is scheduled though, you will have a fixed cost to work with rather than the unknown of ongoing weekly therapy.

Find real and life changing healing in a matter of days rather than months or years. In the long run, Therapy Intensives are more cost effective because the therapy is concentrated and highly focused. The work is much more efficient and, in the end, requires less session time and less cost overall.  Rather than opening up and closing things down each week within a one-hour session, we only have to open things up once allowing more session time to be spent processing and healing.

Many clients can complete a Therapy Intensive and then return to their lives ready to move forward. Some clients will benefit from having a working relationship with their therapist who can help them deal with other areas if they are only working on certain aspects of their treatment during their Therapy Intensive. Some clients with more complex or lifelong traumas may need to schedule multiple Therapy Intensives to fully process and heal their stories. In these cases, a weekly therapist to help manage things between retreats may be recommended or required. This will be thoroughly assessed and discussed prior to your Therapy Intensive.

Intensives are not for everyone and thorough assessment of a potential client’s readiness for intensive work is provided in an intake session conducted prior to scheduling a Therapy Intensive.

When considering if a Therapy Intensive is right for you, please consider the following:

- Insurance does not cover this service and therefore will not be accepted or billed

- A daily rate of $1000 will be charged for Therapy Intensives

- A deposit of 50% is required to hold the dates of your Therapy Intensive and full payment will be collected the first day of your Intensive

- To provide a confidential and relaxing atmosphere for all of our clients, children and visitors are not permitted to wait on location

- No alcoholic beverages or illicit substances will be allowed throughout the entirety of your retreat as this can interfere with processing and slow progress

Even though my practice is located in Shreveport, Louisiana, that doesn’t mean you have to be.  Clients can travel from anywhere in the world to Shreveport to spend a few days in an Intensive and then return home to their daily lives – wherever that may be.
